Cranioclast - Lost In Karak / Somnii Palus

Released as a combined entity in 1992, these two titles from Cranioclast were originally released in 1988 ( Lost In Karak lp CoC 03) and 1987 ( Somnii Palus track on Cris Con Tala ADN TAPES 23) respectively. In some spots reminiscent of the music of Hybryds, it differs in that it doesn't concentrate on the ritual. Magic and numerology is definitely of interest to Cranioclast - they seem to follow the path of many by including the numbers 11 and 23 wherever they can (I'm sure they would rather I spelled 'magic' with a 'k' at the end, but that's a whole other kettle of fish). The music varies from psychedelic-tinted space music to ambient excursions and treated bird calls. Highlights are the tracks "A Link At Orsk" and "Lost In Karak". "Orsk" features a slowly tumbling rhythm over top of deep, synthetic choruses and the aforementioned bird calls. Muted voices are added in for intrigue. "Karak" gives the feeling of trains passing by in the still of the night. Very haunting. Very nice packaging on this one, it comes in an oversized cardboard box with many inserts of the unique art aesthetic of Cranioclast exhibited on quality paper stock. Lost In Karak / Somnii Palus was released on cd by Flabbergast (FG 06) in 1992. This is the first edition in the cardboard box with the inserts.

Verboten / Tabu - The Sensual Art Of Wading

I could find no info on Verboten and Tabu. The only thing I know is that there both from Sweden. Anyone any more info? Verboten is a bit of a strange group as there 4 first tracks are synthesized pop with minimal and cold wave influences and with the next tracks shifts into ritual ambient to end with 3 experimental tracks, in other words something for everyone. The B track by Tabu is a highly ritual live recording from 1984, with drums, flute and tapes. Excellent stuff. The Sensual Art Of Wading was released as a cassette by Konduktör Rekords (kr06) in 1985.

Tracks:

1. Verboten - Dina Ormar
2. Verboten - Half Past Two
3. Verboten - Your Face

5. Verboten - The Towercock
6. Verboten - Sinful Women
7. Verboten - The Death-Hylm

Carlos Zíngaro - Cenas de uma tarde de Verão

As requested by Paolo and contributed by Orbis Tertius another Carlos Zingaro. Since the late 1970s, violinist Carlos "Zingaro" Alves has worked with many of the top improvisers and composers of his time. Born in Portugal, Zingaro studied classical music at his hometown of Lisbon's Music Conservatory from the age of five, until 1965. He was a member of the Lisbon University Chamber Orchestra during the '60s, and in the latter half of the decade formed Plexus, which was the only Portuguese new music group around. Plexus drew from contemporary classical, rock and improvisation, and recorded a single for RCA Victor. During this time, Zingaro also studied church organ. After completing his Stage Design studies at Lisbon Theater High School (where he later served on the board of directors), he became heavily involved in scoring and performing music for theater productions. Zingaro began working with a number of leading improvisers from the mid-'70s on. In addition to these collaborations, from 1974 to 1980 he served as music director for Lisbon-based theater group Comicos. Zingaro also helped found an art gallery of the same name during this time. In 1979, he received a Fulbright Grant and was invited to come to Woodstock, NY and participate in the Creative Music Foundation. Anthony Braxton, Roscoe Mitchell, Tom Cora and Richard Teitelbaum (who became a regular collaborator) are some of the artists Zingaro worked with while there. His involvement with the theater continued as he received the Portuguese Critics Award for best theater music (1981), worked with Italian theater director Giorgio Barberio Corsetti on his +Kafka Trilogy (1988), and worked as stage and costume designer for other productions. Zingaro has also produced several film scores, and collaborated with dance companies including the Gulbenkian dance company and Opera de Geneve D.C. He has performed at new and improvised music festivals in Europe, Asia and North America. The '90s found Zingaro performing on many recordings including his regular collaborations with Richard Teitelbaum; recording with bassist Joëlle Léandre for the In Situ and Musicworks labels; his work with Peter Kowald Ort Ensemble for FMP's 1995 release, Cuts; and Western Front, his duo recording with Vancouver cellist Peggy Lee, that Hatology released in 1996. ~ Joslyn Layne, All Music Guide. Cenas de uma tarde deVerão was released on cd by Teatro Nacional D. Maria II and AnAnAnA (TNDM II 001CD) in 1997.

Hugo Klang - The Wheel Of Fat / Mouse Runner

Hugo klang is another band by Ian Olsen aka Ollie Olson (also see the previous Orchestra of Skin and Bone post) with Marie Hoy as the only two credited on the back cover, but I suspect they had a little help from John Murphy, who where close friends in those days. Ollie Olsen has been producing innovative music in Australia for the past twenty-five years. He began studying electronic music in the mid 70s under Felix Werder, a German composer living in Australia who had studied under Karlheinz Stockhausen. In the late 70's Ollie formed one of the first electronic bands, Whirlywirld, releasing a number of recordings on Missing Link Records. During the next ten years Ollie formed experimental outfits Hugo Klang, Orchestra of Skin and Bone and NO. The sound is a percussive minimal electronic style with a strong influence by The Birthday Party, as Ollie's vocals just sound like Nick Cave. This is truly an amazing 7". The Wheel Of Fat / Mouse Runner was released on vinyl as a 7" by Au Go Go (ANDA 24) in 1982.

Various - On-Slaught No. 1 and No. 2

On-Slaught magazine was founded by Jody Quirk (editor) in 1982 and published by Artwerk Records with the intent of bringing attention to unusual and experimental music. The first two issues had flexi-discs in them and were successful on a cult level and brought the magazine notoriety in the darker side of the budding new wave / post-punk/ electronic music scene of the early 80s. On-Slaught No. 5 can be found here, On-Slaught No. 6 can be found here. A Big Thanks to NXP for this.
