Virgin Prunes - A New Form Of Beauty 1 - 4

As requested by Eden 263, New Form of Beauty stands as one of most audacious projects in pop history, even if the mainstream of popular culture has no idea who the Virgin Prunes are, or that it existed in the first place. New Form of Beauty, Pts. 1-4 represents early, pre-debut-LP offerings from Ireland's Virgin Prunes, a band that grew up alongside U2 -- in fact, vocalist Gavin Friday would often finish sets for Bono when he couldn't go the distance. The project was conceived in seven original parts, only four were ever released. New Form of Beauty captures very closely the controlled and often anarchic art damage that the band was doing in a live setting early on. Industrial sounds wrapped around more conventional guitar, bass, drum, and keyboard trappings, singers Gavin Friday and Guggi were both outrageously androgynous, utterly captivating front men. The band's influences range wide and far from folk songs to Throbbing Gristle to the dynamics of bands like Joy Division, PIL, and even Germany's Can, though the Prunes' sonic approach was utterly unique. It is nocturnal always, often nightmarish, like the nether soundtrack to a carnival sideshow, it is, to borrow from Jean Dubuffett, art brut , outsider art of high poetic and aesthetic quality even when it is falling apart. Highly recommended for its excess as well as its achievement.

Awesome! I just found this blog a few days ago when I discovered you'd uploaded Red Ronnie's "Nice Tracks" comp - one of my favorite LPs from the 80s. I've been wearing out rapidshare ever since. Great to have this early Virgin Prunes. I was never much of a fan, but this early stuff is wonderfully weird. Any chance you've got the Stretchheads Five Fingers, Four Thingers, A Facelift and a New Identity lying around?

Great to see that people are still interested in these releases. I've always thought that A New Form Of Beauty was the strongest and most interesting of all of the Virgin Prunes' material.

"The project was conceived in seven original parts, only four were ever released."

As your description of the Part 4 cassette indicates, Part 5 was actually a live performance and so it's not strictly true to say that it was never "released". You can see a ticket for the event here.

Parts 6 and 7 were going to be a book and a video. These were definitely never released but apparently both exist as unfinished projects (see this interview for the question that I put to Gavin on this subject a few years ago).

Some of the intended footage for the video was shown at the Virgin Prunes Matinee event in Brussels in October 2004, at the time of the re-release of the band's back catalogue on Mute Records.

Fantastic music, the Virgin Prunes specifically and this blog generally. I thoroughly recommend "A New Form Of Beauty" as a long term favourite.

Hello,
about A New Form of Beauty 1-7...never edited...

I have found in my collection a cassette (I think it was sent to me by my late friend Claude Bessy, who worked with the Virgin Prunes) published in small PVC wallet (red on the back, transparent on front)with a folded professionally printed sticker as cover, and with the informations : Virgin Prunes - A New Form of Beauty, and below a small photo : PARTS 1-7.
The stickers on the audio cassette are red without any information about the recording, which seems to be a live one.
No more information...Sorry !

I can send some scans of this mysterious item.
You can leave a message on the http://sordide-sentimental.com web site (click on CONTACT).
