Déficit Des Années Antérieures - Les Ambulants

The nice Mr. Continuo must have had a little peep into my mind while he posted the D.D.A.A. ‘La Famille des Saltimbanques’ cassette, as he makes a reference to their Les Ambulants lp, just the one I was recording to post today. So now on to Les ambulants : in 1984 DDAA where still an obscure group of experimental music makers who used improvisation and collage to craft strange sounds and deconstructed songs for highly creative music that is as far off the path of conventions as that of similar but more known visionaries like the Residents and Nurse With Wound. In fact, DDAA roughly began the same time as NWW in the late '70s, started by three visual artists, Sylvie Martineau, Jean-Philippe Fee, and Jean-Luc Andre in Lion sur Mer, France. The multi-talented trio originally formed Illusion Productions to create plastic sculpture and other various artistic pursuits and DDAA became the musical arm of Illusion. Déficits des AnnéesAntérieures, their full name, translates roughly in English as "last year's deficit," though perhaps more appropriate is the fact that their initials are an anagram of Dada, that pre-Surrealism art movement at the time of World War I. As none of the three were trained musicians, their music had a distinct naive quality of outsider art and with few noticeable influences, exists on a plane of its own. Like others whose music is too uncompromisingly different to become commercial, DDAA began releasing recordings under the umbrella of Illusion Productions, starting with a 7" 45, Miss Vandam, in 1979. Research into various traditional ethnic music resulted in the EP Adventures in Africa in 1981 and the LP Action & Japanese Demonstration the next year, with hand-painted covers and elaborate packaging and inserts. Bernard C joined the lineup to play on the 1984 album Les Ambulants and continued on and off with them until the early '90s. Throughout the '80s and '90s, the group continued to put out records and tapes, as well as perform, and even exhibit artwork in various galleries in Paris and Nice. One highly recommended album. Les Ambulants was released on vinyl by Illusion Production (IP 020) in 1984.

Various - Stator

Excellent compilation album from 1987 with a magazine stuck to the middle of the gatefold cover.

About the bands :

Die Wohnhaft : French experimental band with a Test Dept. touch founded by N. Stuviska. Anyone any more info.
Greater Than One : Lee Newman and Michael Wells formed Greater Than One in London, circa 1985. The group was created to explore art through performance, recordings, and installations. They released albums on Graeme Revell's Side Effects label, WaxTrax! and ROIR in the USA, Torso in Europe, and their own imprint, K=K.
Nox : French industrial act from the 80s/90s. Formed by Cécile Babiole, Laurent Perrier, Gerome Nox and Laurent Pernice. Nox ceased to exist in 1994. Laurent Perrier is the founder of the excellent French record label Odd Size.
Boubonese Qualk : Started in Southport (UK) in 1979. First performance in 1980 with an odd non-musical appearance before (mainly vandalism). Steven Tanza (Percussion, Vocals), Simon Crabb (Guitar, Bass, Violin, Vocals, Electronics). You can download there whole discography for free from there own website, go here.
Olea Fragans : Is a French band à la Ptôse, and that's all the info I can give. Anyone any info.
The rest of the bands are already well known.
There seems to be two releases of this album. The release here is the one to be found most and was released on In9 and Proekos Product (INNR 001). The other one was released on Danceteria (DAN 445) with a slightly different cover. Both are from 1987.

Tracks :

1. Die Wohnhaft - Avec Ou Sans Toi
2. Greater Than One - Silly People
3. Zos Kia - Muggy The Staff
4. Zos Kia - Black Action (Heavy Shit Mix)
5. Étant Donnés - L'Autre Rive
6. Nox - Yawa
7. Greater Than One - Slog On (Dead Beat)
8. Bourbonese Qualk - Sweat It Out
9. Olea Fragans - Justine Est Faite
10. Déficit Des Années Antérieures - Ode A L'Alcool De Riz

(A Little note, for some reason the volume level on Black Action suddenly drops until the end of the song, maybe it's a pressing fault.)

Graeme Revell - The Insect Musicians and Various - Necropolis, Amphibians & Reptiles - The Music Of Adolf Wölfli

The Insect Musicians is an album performed and produced by Graeme Revell. It is a symphony of tsetse fly, death’s-head hawkmoth, bog bush cricket, screech beetle, queen bee laying eggs, and 35 other insect sounds collected from around the world. Revell saw the potential for insects as an auditory art medium : « Perhaps the most fecund territory for future explorations in art and music lies in the miniature; in detailed experiments with nuances of rhythm and timber, detail and colour. And perhaps the ultimate horizon of technology is Nature itself. » Graeme Revell was born in New Zealand in 1955, Graeme Revell moved to Australia were he founded the legendary industrial band SPK in 1978. After three records of extreme noise assaults and controversial subjects, SPK turned into a synth-pop band in 1984, consisting of just Revell and his wife Sinan Leong. In the mid 80s' Revell started the Musique Brut label to release some solo recordings in the fields of ambient and experimental music. Graeme Revell is now a prolific and appreciated composer of movies soundtracks for a lot of mid and high-budget Hollywood productions. Alas I don't have the booklet that came with the vinyl, but the text can be copied from here.

Tracks :

1. Nocturne (On An Oriental Theme)
2. The Sleeping Sickness
3. Melancholia
4. La Danse Des Ténèbres (Dance Of Shadows)
5. Variation On The 'Sakura' (Japanese Traditional)
6. Nature Morte (Still Life)
7. BalineseTwilights
8. Phobia (An Australian Theme)
9. Invaders Of The Heart
10. Et Spiritus Sanctus

Necropolis, Amphibians & Reptiles - The Music Of Adolf Wölfli is a tribute to the mad Swiss artist Adolf Wölfli (1864-1930), painter and music composer. His music was never played but just written on paper. Musique Brut presents it for the first time, interpreted by a number of industrial/experimental international artists. Wölfli had a troubled childhood. He suffered abuse and molestation and was orphaned at the age of 10, thereafter growing up in a series of state -run foster homes. He worked as a farm labourer and briefly joined the army but was later convicted of attempted child molestation for which he served prison time. Sometime after being freed he was arrested for a similar offence and was admitted in 1895 to the Waldau Clinic in Berne, Switzerland, a psychiatric hospital where he spent the rest of his adult life. He was very disturbed and sometimes violent on admission, leading to him being kept in isolation for his early time at hospital, perhaps due to his psychosis which led to intense hallucinations. At some point after his admission Wölfli began to draw. Unfortunately his earliest drawings have not survived, so it is difficult to know exactly when he began his artistic explorations, although his first surviving works (a series of 50 pencil drawings) are dated from between 1904 and 1906. Walter Morgenthaler, a doctor at the Waldau Clinic, took a particular interest in Wölfli's art and his condition, later publishing Ein Geisteskranker als Künstler (A Psychiatric Patient as Artist) in 1921 which first brought Wölfli to the attention of the art world. Morgenthaler's book was revolutionary in many ways as it was not simply a clinical study but argued that a person with a severe mental illness could be a serious artist and had the ability to make important contributions to the development of art. The wonderful booklet about Wölfli and the artists is included in the zip file.

The Insect Musicians was released on vinyl by Musique Brut (BRU 001) in 1986. Necropolis, Amphibians & Reptiles - The Music Of Adolf Wölfli was released on vinyl by Musique Brut (BRU 002) in 1986. The Insect Musicians and Side A or the first six tracks of Necropolis, Amphibians & Reptiles - The Music Of Adolf Wölfli was later released on CD as the Musique Brut Collection by The Fine Line (BRUT 1 Cd) in 1994.

Various - Three Minute Symphony

Three Minute Symphony is the excellent counterpart of The Elephant Table Album. Both albums where made by Sounds Magazine journalist Dave Henderson. Compared to The Elephant Table Album who featured only UK bands Three Minute Symphony is an amazing international compilation album, very hard to find, and was never re-released. Most bands need no introduction as they are well known and legendary in there field of expertise, but some are still unknown to me and more info about them would be wonderful, the bands are : Point Of Collapse, Roll Kommando, Hurt, Kill Ugly Pop, Philip Johnson, the only thing I know of Nagamatzu is that they are a duo, namely Stephen Jarvis & Andrew Lagowski, Trax is an Italian multi-media label who have released all manner of wondrous stuff. Mail Art, 3D viewing cards, magazines records and cassettes and was run by Vittore Baroni. Three Minute Symphony was released as a double lp on X Tract (XX 002) in 1984.

DDAA - Ronsard LP + 7" + Tape

This obscure group of radical experimental noise makers used improvisation and collage to craft strange sounds and deconstructed songs for highly creative music that is as far off the path of conventions as that of similar but more known visionaries like the Residents and Nurse With Wound. In fact, DDAA roughly began the same time as NWW in the late '70s, started by three visual artists, Sylvie Martineau, Jean-Philippe Fee, and Jean-Luc Andre in Lion sur Mer, France. Like others whose music is too uncompromisingly different to become commercial, DDAA began releasing recordings under the umbrella of Illusion Productions.

Ronsard was released on KK Records/Electrip (KKo11, EL01) on lp in 1988, the 7" was released on KK Records/Electrip (KK 012, EL02) in 1988 as a Limited Edition of 200 Copies, incl. with 'Ronsard' LP in 69 numbered & 131 unnumbered Sleeves. The lp & 7" where released on cd by KK Records/Electrip (KKo11 CD, EL01 CD) with one bonus track the same year.

The tape is a whole different matter, I got it with the lp and 7" as part of the first numbered copies (mine 33 of 69), if the tape was issued with all of the 69 numbered copies I do not know as there is nothing to be found on the net about the tape. The Ronsard 1524 - 1585 tape was made in June 1985 and issued as the copyright suggests in 1988 by Illusion Production (iPO36).
The tape sounds different than the lp.

Various - Masse Mensch

Another fabulous compilation from the 80's compiled by Ralf Wehowsky and Roger Schönauer of P16.D4. A very interesting compilation of leading experimental - industrial artists as :

Laughing Hands : Born in 1958 in Melbourne, Paul Schütze studied Fine Arts at the Caufield Institute of Technology. In the late '70s he was a percussionist with the Fourth Stream Percussion Ensemble before founding the seminal '80s improv group Laughing Hands, adding percussive and synthetic textures to one of Australia's most important and influential experimental forces.

P16.D4 : P16D4 was a German band whose music bordered on the industrial and on the cacophonous. They managed to fuse the playful irrationality of dadaism and the oppressive tones of expressionism.

Nurse With Wound & Smegma : Need no introduction.

The Work : Was an English post-punk rock group founded in 1980 by multi-instrumentalist and composer Tim Hodgkinson ( ex Henry Cow ) and guitarist/composer Bill Gilonis, with bass guitarist Mick Hobbs and drummer Rick Wilson. The band toured Europe in 1981 and 1982, and recorded their first album, Slow Crimes in 1982. After a tour of Japan later that year and releasing Live in Japan, the band split up. In 1989.

DDAA : This obscure group of radical experimental noise makers used improvisation and collage to craft strange sounds and deconstructed songs for highly creative music that is as far off the path of convention. In the late '70s, started by three visual artists, Sylvie Martineau, Jean - Philippe Fee, and Jean-Luc Andre in Lion sur Mer, France. Like others whose music is too uncompromisingly different to become commercial, DDAA began releasing recordings under the umbrella of Illusion Productions.

Masse Mensch was original released on lp by Selektion (SLP 001) in 1982 and rereleased in 1992 on cd by Odd Size (CD OS 08).
